Security concerns account for some of the
customer resistance to online banking
BOSTON - September 10, 2003 - Consumers
are more likely to use online banking if they are confident that
their sensitive information like passwords and checking account
numbers are protected, not just when on a secure site but also when
browsing sites that may not be secure or trusted. Winferno Software
provides a web browser security solution, Secure IE 2003, that
protects users' information at the main point of external contact -
the web browser.
Since home users and small business users access the Internet and
store their personal information for online banking and sensitive
financial or tax information on the same computer, the risk of
hackers or unauthorized users capturing this information is higher.
Accessing users' personal information via their web browser is one
more trick in the hackers' arsenal of tools.
While anti-virus software can protect against incoming and outgoing
viruses via email attachments, users do not have the same protection
through their web browser. When browsing the Internet, users can
unknowingly trigger the download of unwanted ActiveX and JavaScript
software commands from malicious websites, or even while on secure
bank websites. A harmful program download such as a keystroke logger
can capture passwords and other sensitive information that might be
stored on a computer's hard drive. Winferno's Secure IE 2003
automatically intercepts these unwanted 'drive-by' program downloads
making the users' browsing experience safer.
Feedback from Secure IE users
"If you still want to use your computer for your banking and/or
purchasing, then I highly recommend Secure IE for tighter
security," said Secure IE user Karen Kapusta.
"I was able to go places without the trouble of a regular
browser. The security also allowed me to access and pay for items I
normally wouldn't do online," said Secure IE user Deanna
Thompson.
Productivity Tools, Too
In addition to the security features that Secure IE 2003 offers
there are a number of productivity features combined in the one
program like the ability to save secure web pages as a single file.
Once a user has completed a transaction or updated their banking
information online they can easily save this financial information
as a single file. This is much easier than saving multiple files or
the inability to save due to the complexity of the page. Users may
find other productivity features to be useful while online banking
such as tabbing multiple web pages and adding sticky notes or yellow
highlighter to a transaction web page.
"We periodically take random surveys of our user base to find
out how they are using Secure IE 2003. Users have been telling us
that with the enhanced security that Secure IE provides they are
more assured in using the Internet for online banking and making
online purchases, which they would not have done previously,"
said Jon Lal, President of Winferno Software. "Its good to know
that we can provide the most vulnerable users, home users, with a
trusted and secure solution to complete their daily tasks on the
Internet."
