What are security zones?
|
|
Security Zones are simple a way to classify websites into three security categories
- Browser Security : Low,
Browser Security : Medium and
Browser Security : High.
Each category has limits on what it will allow a website to do.
Most websites use technologies such as Java, ActiveX, and Cookies to improve the functionality
of the website (such as remembering your login name). However, less scrupulous websites can
use Java, ActiveX, cookies and file downloads to install software and monitor what you do with
your computer.
Based on how much you trust a particular website, you may want to restrict Java, ActiveX,
and Cookies capabilities by setting the website to Browser
Security : High.
|
Security Zones:
|
Browser Security : Low (Trusted Sites)
This zone is for sites that you trust (such as your bank) and feel comfortable allowing
certain security privileges (such as ActiveX, cookies, Java, etc).
Browser Security : Medium (Unclassified Sites)
This zone is for sites that you haven’t classified or you’re not sure of.
Browser Security : High (Restricted Sites)
This zone is for sites that you don’t trust and want to restrict the access they have
to your PC. You can protect your PC by not allowing these sites certain privileges such
as ActiveX, cookies, file downloads, etc.
|
Limitations of Security Zones
|
Security zones only control Research-Desk's or Microsoft Internet Explorer's settings for web
browsing. This does not in any way alleviate the need for a firewall (which controls and limits
internet access for all programs on your computer), or a virus scanner (which scans incoming
email and your hard drive for viruses).
We recommend that you use the zone settings described here in conjunction with a
firewall program and anti-virus software.
