As you add and remove software and hardware, your registry is constantly changing. But what if your registry becomes corrupted? A corrupted registry can cause anything from a minor annoyance, to a full-blown system meltdown. Forutunately you can be prepared for this scenario by regularly backing up your system's registry if you use Windows 98, ME or 2000. If you use Windows XP, you can back up your registry and key Windows OS files at the same time. Please note: restoring an old copy of the registry is not a recommended option unless you have no other alternatives. If improperly restored, the registry will cease to function and your operating system will no longer run. Please only follow these steps as a last resort for registry restore. Windows XP and system restore however, is a much easier process to use and much less likely to damage your system if done improperly. Windows XP 1. To open System Restore go to Start > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. 2. Select "Restore your computer to earlier time" then click Next. 3. Use the calendar to select a restore point when you think your system was functioning normally. Windows XP will then reload the Registry from the restore point that you selected. A quick note about System Restore: Any programs or hardware that were installed after the restore point will probably not work after using the restore. You will need to re-install any software and hardware drivers that you had installed after the last restore point. Windows 2000 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type regedt32, and then click OK. 3. On the Registry menu, click Restore. 4. Select the file that you saved (look in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Winferno\RegPowerClean\), and then click Open. 5. Click Yes to continue. Windows 98 1. Start your system in DOS by holding the F8 key after turning on the computer. 2. Select Start in DOS from the Windows startup screen. 3. Type "scanreg/restore" at the C:\ prompt to run the Microsoft Registry Checker. The program displays the last five backup Registry files and the dates they were saved. 4. Select the most recent backup file that is dated prior to the time when the computer problems occurred. 5. Click Restore to restore the Registry. The Microsoft Registry Checker verifies the backup file before restoring it and prompts you to restart the computer | |
