Identifies and seals potential security leaks before they become a problem:
Secure IE Suite:
Firefox:
Secure IE’s Internet Security Tune Up automatically configures your Internet
settings for maximum security. It also disables Windows Messenger service
to stop those popups. Secure IE turns off auto-install of ActiveX controls
and restricts ActiveX to only our pre-approved “safelist”. Secure IE
blocks many known security vulnerabilities, such as changes to the home
page or favorites. Secure IE also automatically updates itself from the
Internet to stay current with any new threats.
Firefox has features for controlling popups, downloading permissions
and downloaded images. However, it has no measures in place for
handling limited ActiveX access. Firefox restricts ActiveX altogether.
ActiveX is basically a technology that allows windows programs to run
on cross-platform browsers. This means that code written for a PC can
run on a Mac through a website. This makes web programming much more
robust and usable. Websites like CNN.com and BankofAmerica.com use
ActiveX.
Stops Spyware at the point of entry:
Secure IE Suite:
Firefox:
Secure IE protects your computer at the main point of external contact -
your web browser - and tightly restricts what websites can and cannot
do to your PC. Secure IE controls popups, Flash and ActiveX by security
zone. If a website is on the safelist, then popups, Flash and ActiveX controls
will be able to run normally. If a website is classified as one you don’t trust,
anything that a spyware program might use to gain access to your computer is
strictly prohibited. This means that spyware can’t get in.
Firefox lets you specify websites that are allowed to display
popups and will deny popups for all other sites.
Eliminates Windows Messenger Pop-up Ads:
Secure IE Suite:
Firefox:
The most common type of popup is the popup window. A popup window is a new
browser window that appears (unrequested by you) on your screen. These popups
occur when you are using your web browser. The second most common type of
popup is Windows Messenger popups. These are usually grey boxes that look
like the information or error boxes that sometimes come up in Windows
programs. Hackers use Windows Messenger popups to advertise an assortment
of products, but unlike normal popups, Windows Messenger popups can appear
on your screen when no other program is open. Secure IE employs both popup
windows blocking and Windows Messenger popups blocking.
Firefox has only popup windows blocking. It does nothing to stop
Windows Messenger popups.
Intercepts malicious file downloads:
Secure IE Suite:
Firefox:
Secure IE has a Download Manager that helps you keep track of and organize
the files you download from the Internet. Secure IE also routes all
incoming downloads through a virus scanner (such as McAfee or Norton)
to make sure that you aren’t downloading something malicious onto your
computer.
Firefox also has a Download Manager, but does nothing in the way of
virus scanning downloaded files.
Custom security levels for multiple websites:
Secure IE Suite:
Firefox:
In the Secure IE Security Manager, you can decide whether a website is
assigned to a low, medium or high level of security. Low security is for
sites that you trust (such as your bank) and feel comfortable allowing
security privileges such as ActiveX, Cookies, and Java. Medium security
is for sites that you do not know whether to trust or not. Such sites will
be allowed limited ActiveX, Cookies, Java and other capabilities. The High
security zone is for sites that you DO NOT TRUST. High security zone websites
are given no privileges. Your PC and personal information will be better
protected from access by these sites as ActiveX, Cookies, Java and File
Downloads are totally restricted.
Firefox allows you to dictate sites that are allowed to use popup windows,
install software on your computer, load images, and use Java/JavaScript.
But in each case, the feature is either on or off. You are not allowed to
give any limited permissions, nor can you classify website by Security Zone.
Ensures that confidential information (such as credit card
numbers...) stored on your PC stays private:
Secure IE Suite:
Firefox:
The Secure IE Suite clears out cookies, temp files, the recycle bin, browser
history, browser cache, and your recent documents list. This ensures that all
your private information isn’t being stored somewhere on your computer where a
hacker could exploit it.
Firefox offers two ways to manage the deletion of documents on your computer,
which are deleting cookies and deleting browser cache. But both of these functions
must be done manually. Nothing is automatic and it only handles files that are
specific to the browser. It doesn’t handle recent documents or the recycle bin.
