The Secure IE Suite can be set to block a number of speed hogging
culprits including images, Flash animations, videos and background
sounds.
Firefox allows your to manually input websites that you don't want to load
images. But this means that all images on that website are completely
blocked.
Features a "virtual address book" of websites
for faster connections:

Every website (such as www.yahoo.com) has a corresponding number, similar
to a phone number, attached to it. (This is technically called an IP
address.) They do this because it would be hard for a normal internet
user to remember that 122.448.899.90 is the number for Yahoo. For a
typical web browser this means that every time www.yahoo.com is typed
in, the browser has to “dial up” the websites and ask for the correct
“phone number”. Secure IE is different in that it remembers these numbers
every time you call and saves them in a virtual address book (this is
also known as DNS caching). This means less time wasted on “dialing” and
less time for a website to load. What’s more, websites, like people,
sometimes move and change addresses. Secure IE is constantly monitoring
these and updating its address book.
Firefox does not use DNS caching and therefore has to search out a
website's IP address every time it is typed in.
