Compare WinZip and SnapZip

Saturday, November 07, 2009

Zip technology is the most common and popular type of file compression used in computing today. It has countless real life applications such as creating smaller email attachments, backing up important data and compressing your digital photos. Today I'm going to run you through the advantages and disadvantages of two popular zip programs: WinZip and SnapZip.
Unzips Zip and WinZip Files
SnapZip:
WinZip:

Both SnapZip and WinZip are built to zip and unzip the same industry standard zip files. When someone asks you to "unzip a WinZip file" or "unzip such and such" they are really asking you to use a program like SnapZip or WinZip to unzip a .zip file. And there are many programs that can do this. Read on to see which program is right for you. But remember, WinZip and Zip files are exactly the same.

Drag and Drop, to Zip and Unzip Files
SnapZip:
WinZip:

Both SnapZip and WinZip allow you to drag and drop files into the zip programs. However, there are some differences. Dragging and dropping is as easy as it sounds with SnapZip. I just drag my file and it appears in the SnapZip main screen.

When I tried this in WinZip a message box with a lot of options appeared. "Add" seemed like the right choice, but when I clicked on it, WinZip gave me an error message stating that I needed to specify a valid file name. A little confused, I clicked OK and saw that I needed to either create a new zip file or locate an existing one. Then I was allowed to click "Add" and my file showed up in the main WinZip interface. It was baffling, but I think that it worked.

Scan Zip files for Viruses
SnapZip:
WinZip:

Both SnapZip and WinZip work with your already installed virus-scanner to scan zip files for viruses. This feature requires that you have a popular virus scanner such as McAfee VirusScan, Norton AntiVirus, etc already installed on your PC.

Email Support in 1 business day

WinZip:

WinZip says they usually answer in 1 business day. Winferno's SnapZip offers the same kind of email support.

Advanced Photo Compression
SnapZip:
WinZip:

Advanced photo compression is a feature that is unique to SnapZip and is not found in WinZip or most other zip programs. When I compressed my photos, SnapZip asked me if I'd like to reduce them to screen quality and compress them even further. Since I was emailing my pictures to a friend, this was a great option for me. It allowed me to squish them even more, and the email went instantly without that annoying delay that I often experience with large pictures.

Simple Zip and Email
SnapZip:
WinZip:

When I started SnapZip, I was greeted with a screen with three Wizard options:
  • Zip
  • UnZip
  • Zip and Email
I chose the Zip and Email option. In just two simple steps I was able to complete the entire process. First I was guided to choose the files I'd like to zip. Second, SnapZip asked me for a name for a zip file. And then the blank email message popped up, ready to send, with my new zip file attached.

WinZip will also let you email your zip file but the feature is poorly hidden within the interface. When I open the WinZip interface and choose the Wizards option, I first come to a welcome screen. After I click "Next" I'm given three options:
  • Unzip or install from an existing zip file
  • Update an existing Zip file
  • Create a new zip file
In WinZip, all of these actions are bundled into one complicated and rather intimidating Wizard whereas SnapZip has simple individual wizards for each task.

I choose to create a new zip file. From here I am asked to name my new zip file or locate an existing file. (Modifying an existing file was an option I could have chosen in the previous screen, but did not). Now I'm confused, so just for arguments sake, I chose to locate an existing file. When I do, I get an error message asking me if I want to modify an existing zip file. It seems that both WinZip and myself are stumbling in the same place.

Next, I'm asked to add files to the zip. Once I've done that, I press the "Zip Now" button. On the next screen I get an option to Mail this Zip file. If I click on that option a blank email will appear with the zip file attached. See what I mean about being hidden?

Simple Wizards for each common task
SnapZip:
WinZip:

Both SnapZip and WinZip feature Wizards. However they are not equally easy to use.

SnapZip clearly offers you three separate Wizards options.
  • Zip
  • Unzip
  • Zip and Email
These options are both in the welcome screen and at the top of the program. With just a few clicks you can easily accomplish any of these common tasks.

WinZip has a built in Wizard in the main interface. They do not have separate Wizards for each application, but have them all in one Wizard. You can:
  • Unzip or install from an existing zip file
  • Update an existing Zip file
  • Create a new zip file
Personally, I found this layout confusing and more than a few times, got lost within this Wizard.

30-Day, Hassle Free Guarantee
SnapZip:
WinZip:

SnapZip features a 30-day, hassle free guarantee. If you don't like it, all you have to do is return before 30 days and you get your money back!

WinZip does not offer any satisfaction guarantees.

Not all Zip Programs are Created Equal

As you can see in this overview there are some pretty big differences in how SnapZip and WinZip are created. For me, the ease of use, the clearly marked Wizards and the advanced photo compression make SnapZip the one I'll choose. Learn More About SnapZip...
