Zipping Files

When a coworker asks you to just “zip this file up and email it to me” do you
break into a cold sweat? Topics involving file compression may seem daunting
and scary, but they don’t need to be.
What is Zipping?
Zip technology is the most common and popular type of file compression used
in computing today. Compressing a file is simply a process that takes
any normal file and squeezes it into something smaller. And then when
you want to use the file again, you “unzip” it back to its normal
size.
Why Should You Zip?
Getting into the practice of zipping your files has lots of benefits. Zipped
files are much smaller than normal files so they save space on your computer
and allow you to store more files. Zipped files are also really good for
archiving files that you don’t use very often but want to keep. For example,
if you like taking digital photos but don’t have a huge hard drive, zipping
your photos up and burning them onto a CD would open up tons of space on
your computer.
And if you find yourself attaching files in emails to friends, family or
coworkers, zipping could save you a lot of time and hassle. Every time
you send an attachment in an email, you are actually transferring a file
from your computer to another computer somewhere on the Internet. Sending
large files across big spaces can take big time, and if your connection
is broken or runs out of time, you have to start all over again. How
frustrating! Zipping up the attachments in your emails means smaller
files to transfer and much shorter connection times.
What About Quality?
A lot of people think that when a file is zipped up and then later unzipped
that it loses quality. That somehow, zipped photos become fuzzy, zipped
Excel spreadsheets loose data, and zipped Word documents become unreadable.
Fortunately, with the right zipping program, this is not the case.
Zip technology is very sophisticated and the methods used in compressing
files are intelligent enough that little or no data is lost when a file
is zipped up. Photos remain clear, Excel spreadsheets are as accurate as
ever and Word documents look exactly the same. The trade-off you get in
terms of space on your computer and transmission time in your emails is
outstanding.
Where can I get a good Zipping Program
There are tons of zipping programs on the market today. The problem with many
of them is that they are so confusing to use. They have buttons that don’t
make sense and other features that aren’t intuitive at all. If you want a
zipping solution that is effective and easy to use, then there is only one
place to turn.
